Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the hands on manipulation of muscles and connective tissue to relieve muscle tension and pain, increase mobility, enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues.

Often thought of as a luxury, the face of massage has been changing. You can still get a relaxing massage treatment in a spa, but massage is more than just a way to relax. It's being used in more and more clinical settings. Massage therapist work closely as a team with Physiotherapists and other health care practitioners to heal various musculoskeletal injuries. 

This ancient healing art has been practiced by the Chinese and other Asian cultures for thousands of years. It was used by ancient Greeks and Egyptians to promote healing. Out of the variety of cultures that used touch therapies in their traditional medical practices many types of massage therapy, described below, have developed.

Deep connective tissue massage releases tension in the fascia to relieve chronic pain. This intense form of therapeutic massage combines aspects of Swedish massage and myofascial release to heal dysfunction. 

Deep tissue massage is a commonly asked for massage in spa and clinical settings. It is used to address pain in a specific area and is commonly used on athletes. 

Acupressure is one of the types of massage therapy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Instead of the needles used in acupuncture, finger pressure is used on points along the meridians.

Joint mobilization is a gentle therapy that uses passive ranges of motion to relieve joint pain and stiffness.

Myofascial Release Technique is a gentle massage technique used to loosen the restricted fascia. It can be used as a therapy on its own and can be combined with other therapies. 

Shiatsu literally translates as finger pressure. This form of massage originated in Japan, but is based on principles borrowed from Chinese acupuncture and anma. It's also known as acupressure.
